Bogota sits on a high Andean plateau at over 2,600 meters (8,600 feet), ringed by mountains, with a climate that stays cool and mild year-round rather than tropical. The city has no metro yet; its first line is under construction, so the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system, along with taxis and rideshares, carries most trips, including to and from El Dorado Airport. The altitude can take a day or two to adjust to, especially for exertion. It's Colombia's political and economic center, with a large, well-preserved colonial core in La Candelaria.

The city of eternal spring
Medellin sits in a narrow valley in the Andes, ringed closely by mountains that give it a famously mild, spring-like climate year-round despite Colombia's tropical latitude. Its airport is in Rionegro, a separate town about 35 km (20 mi) away over a mountain pass, normally a 40- to 60-minute drive or bus ride; the Medellin Metro, while extensive within the valley, does not reach it. The city transformed dramatically in recent decades from a difficult past into one of Latin America's most visited destinations. Cable cars (Metrocable) connect the valley floor to hillside neighborhoods that buses and cars struggle to reach.
