The Queen City
Charlotte grew fast on banking money into a tidy modern skyline ringed by miles of newer suburbs across the rolling North Carolina Piedmont. The center is compact and walkable for a few blocks around the towers, but a single light-rail line reaches only a narrow slice of the city. Most of greater Charlotte, including much of what is worth visiting, is easiest reached by car. It is a young, fast-growing city more than an old one, so do not expect much pre-20th-century character.
