Delhi is an enormous, ancient-and-modern capital built across the plains of northern India, layered with the remains of multiple historic capitals alongside the planned colonial-era core of New Delhi. The Delhi Metro is one of the largest rail networks in the world, and its Airport Express line runs nonstop from Indira Gandhi International toward the New Delhi Railway Station area in about 20 minutes. Air quality drops sharply in winter, when smog from crop-burning and weather inversions can blanket the city for weeks. Outside the metro's reach, Delhi's roads carry some of the densest traffic of any capital, so journeys off the rail network take real planning.

A planned capital on the Gulf
Doha rises along the Persian Gulf coastline as a planned, fast-built capital, its skyline of towers and the Museum of Islamic Art arranged along a curving corniche. The Doha Metro's Red Line runs directly into Hamad International Airport, one of the more useful airport-to-downtown rail links in the Gulf region. Summers are extremely hot and humid, with temperatures regularly topping 40°C (104°F) from May to September, while winters are mild and dry. Outside the metro's reach, the city is built around wide highways, and a car or taxi covers most everyday journeys.
