Dubai is a coastal city on the Persian Gulf that grew in a few decades into a dense spine of towers strung along a single highway. The Delhi Metro is one of the largest rail networks in the world, and its Airport Express line runs nonstop from Indira Gandhi International toward the New Delhi Railway Station area in about 20 minutes. Air quality drops sharply in winter, when smog from crop-burning and weather inversions can blanket the city for weeks. Outside the metro's reach, Delhi's roads carry some of the densest traffic of any capital, so journeys off the rail network take real planning.
