Metro Manila is a vast, dense agglomeration of cities around Manila Bay, home to more than 13 million people in one of the most crowded urban areas on Earth. Jeepneys, buses, and a handful of elevated rail lines move much of the city, but traffic is a defining fact of daily life here, often turning short distances into long, slow trips. It's the gateway to a sprawling island nation, and most onward travel within the Philippines means another flight rather than a road or rail trip. The city runs hot and humid year-round, with a distinct typhoon season from roughly June to November.
City access
Ninoy Aquino International has no direct rail connection; the city's LRT and MRT lines require a transfer by bus, jeepney, or taxi to reach any terminal. A Metro Manila Subway spur to the airport is under construction but isn't expected to open before 2029, so road traffic is the main variable in any airport trip. Build significant extra time into the journey, especially at peak hours, since traffic congestion here is among the worst of any major Asian capital.
