The garden city-state
Singapore is a dense, tropical city-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, a single island where the city and the country are the same thing. It is famously orderly and green, easy to cross on a clean and frequent metro, and built for the heat and sudden rain. The center mixes high finance, colonial remnants, and hawker food, with residential towers spread across the island. Distances are short, and the transit makes a car unnecessary.

The Big Durian
Jakarta is a vast, low-lying delta city on Java's north coast, parts of which are sinking and flooding badly enough that Indonesia is building an entirely new capital, Nusantara, to eventually take over some government functions. Soekarno-Hatta Airport, about 20 km (12 mi) from downtown, connects by a direct rail line into the city center, though Jakarta's legendary traffic congestion still makes road trips unpredictable. It runs hot and humid year-round with a heavy wet season from roughly November to March. The city's MRT and bus rapid transit network have expanded quickly in recent years but still cover only a fraction of this enormous metro area.
