The city in the clouds
Quito sits in a long, narrow Andean valley at nearly 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), one of the highest capital cities in the world, with the old colonial center occupying a UNESCO-listed historic core. The airport relocated in 2013 from a site within the city to Tababela, about 35 to 40 minutes east by road; there's no rail link, so buses, shuttles, and taxis cover the trip. The altitude can cause real shortness of breath for visitors, especially on arrival. It's the springboard to both the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon basin, each reached by a separate onward flight.

The altitude can take a day or two to adjust to, especially for exertion. It's Colombia's political and economic center, with a large, well-preserved colonial core in La Candelaria.
